Edmonton Wedding Photography

A man in a bright green traditional outfit and a woman in a matching green dress walk hand-in-hand on a city sidewalk. The woman is smiling and holding a bunch of greens; the man is wearing sunglasses and a black hat, and holding a cane. Above them, there is an old theater marquee with faded lights and a partially visible sign that reads 'AVE...'

Y’all have NO IDEA how amped I was to photograph Ruke and Mark’s big Nigerian wedding celebration.

These lovers met at Cariwest Festival several years ago - Ruke was performing that fateful day. It was a long, hot day, and she was tired, just searching in vain for a place to sit down and chill between performances, but it was beyond crowded. However there just happened to be one space at Mark’s table. He offered it to her, and they hit it off immediately - talk about a meet-cute!

When we found out Cariwest’s dates corresponded with their wedding date, we absolutely had to go there for some photos - sure, it’s an incredibly hectic spot, but the crowds the festival draws were a part of their love story, this crowded chaos is the reason they met. I feel so happy when I can create something meaningful for the folks I photograph.

I’d previously experienced Rwandan and Eritrean wedding customs, but this was my first West African/Nigerian wedding. Do these photos make it look like the best dance party you’ve ever been to? Because that’s exactly what it felt like!

Fun fact - Ruke is from the Yoruba ethnic group and this was the first traditional Yoruba wedding in Edmonton ever! History was made!

… and these are probably my favorite wedding party outfits of all time (designed by Viktoria Duke!)
